Your Eye Examination

There is a lot involved when carrying out an Eye Examination, we usually have a routine we follow to allow consistency and the best experience for our patients

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fZDKHvQ1PE[/embedyt]

History & Symptoms

We will begin with asking detailed questions about your eyesight, lifestyle, general health and any previous eye problems you or family members may have had.

If you have come in regarding a concern with your eyes with will probe further into our questioning to get an accurate account of your symptoms

You should bring a list of any medication you take, along with your glasses if you use them, or a previous glasses prescription.

Eye Sight Test

The next part of the examination involves checking what you can see – close up and in the distance – usually using special charts of symbols or letters with and/or without your glasses. We will then work out whether you need glasses or a change of prescription with a series of tests using different lenses. This will also involve simple questions and you should try to answer these as accurately and honestly as you can. There are no right or wrong answers, so don’t worry.

For those who are unable to answer these questions, there are other ways of working out a glasses prescription. This is particularly useful for young children, those with learning difficulties or special educational needs.

We will also carry out tests on your eye muscles to check how your eyes are working & moving together. At this stage we may carry out extra tests tailored to you & your concerns.

Eye Health Check

We will then examine the inside and outside of your eyes with different equipment under different light and magnification levels. We will tell you if there are any signs of disease or injury. Occasionally we may need to put drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils so that we get a better view of the back of your eye but we will always explain this before doing so.

Sometimes it may be necessary to check your peripheral (or side) vision using a special instrument. This tests for certain conditions of the eyes or the visual parts of your brain.

You may also need an eye-pressure test, which is one of the procedures used to detect glaucoma.

Advice

At the end there will be time to talk through the results of your sight test and ask any questions. We will advise you if you need glasses and make recommendations about the type. We will also tell you if we find any problems with your eyes. If there is something which needs further medical checks, we will write to your doctor or the eye hospital for you.

We will give you a written statement of your results which includes your glasses prescription if you need one. We will also tell you how often you should go for a sight test and advise you about how to keep your eyes healthy.

So don’t forget the importance of a sight test for you and your family!

We can do the following:

  • Early detection of eye diseases – this is usually easier to deal with if found early
  • Check your sight and make it clearer or more comfortable to see
  • Check for signs of underlying general health conditions that sometimes show sign in the eyes
  • Answer questions and give advice about your eye health and vision
  • Keep you informed about new products or services that can help you

Ocular Examination Tests

A list of the extra tests we feel you may require are:

  • Oculomotor Balance
  • Pupillary Reflexes
  • Ocular Motility
  • Accommodation
  • Near Point of Convergence
  • Amsler Chart for Macular disease
  • Colour Vision
  • Stereopsis
  • Slit Lamp Examination
  • Tonometry for Glaucoma Screening
  • Keratometry
  • Visual Field Testing

Our Equipment

We have invested in the latest hi-tech equipment and software within our consulting room. These include the following:

Auto-refractor

An Auto-refractor is a machine used to quickly measure a person’s refractive error and prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. This is achieved by measuring how light is changed as it bounces off the back of a person’s eye. The automated refraction technique is quick, simple and painless. The patient takes a seat and places their chin on a rest. Using one eye at a time, they look into the machine at a picture of a hot air balloon. The picture moves in and out of focus as the machine takes readings to determine when the image is on the retina. Several readings are taken which the machine averages to form a prescription. No feedback is required from the patient during this process.

Keratometer

The keratometer is used to determine the shape of the cornea. It does this by looking at the reflection of light off of the cornea at sixteen different points. These measurements are used to diagnose conditions such as astigmatism , Keratoconus, corneal scarring and corneal distortion. A keratometer is commonly used to fit contact lenses as well.

Digital Retinal camera

This high-tech digital retinal photography allows us to capture real time colour images of the front &  the back of the eye and the surrounding structures. These high resolution images can then be enlarged or enhanced to better diagnose and document the treatment of such conditions as Corneal Ulcers, Cataracts Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration & Glaucoma.

 Visual fields

The visual fields machine is used to test your peripheral and central vision, what we call fields. This automated projection perimeter shines a spot of light onto the back of the eye at predetermined locations and intensities. You are asked to press a button when you see the stimulus. Your responses are analyzed statistically and compared with a database of people your age, both with and without various conditions.

Besides Glaucoma, numerous conditions such as stroke, other vascular problems, and many neurological conditions can be quickly assessed through Visual Field Testing. Retinal disorders such as Retinitis Pigmentosa  and Retinal Detachment can also be diagnosed and monitored by this technology.

Non contact tonometer

A tonometer is used to measure the pressure of the eye. This painless test is one of five we use to help detect the different types of Glaucoma.

The small puff of air acts like a thumb when you press it into a ball to see how full it is. If the eyeball is firm, it has higher pressure, and if it is soft, then the pressure is lower.

Pupillometer

A pupilometer is an instrument which measures the distance between the center of the bridge of your nose and the center of each pupil.  This is important to know for two reasons. First, it tells us where to position the instruments when we are checking your binocular vision.  If the instruments are misaligned, the results will be wrong which will result in an unsatisfactory set of glasses.  Secondly, if the lenses of the glasses are not aligned correctly, it will result in headaches and glasses that don’t work the way they should.  This is especially true in the new progressive or free form design lenses that have become available recently.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

OCT scans of the retina and surrounding structures help us to detect and diagnose certain eye conditions earlier than we may have been able to in the past, allowing for better prognosis. They also enable us to monitor the progression of many common eye conditions such as diabetic eye disease, age related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
